Cyclists Against Smog: SPG bikers take the streets for sustainability April 2017
On April 5, we joined the SiCLeada. SiCLas is a NGO that organizes a massive weekly cycling event on Wednesday evening, with each event following a different route through Medellín. Anyone and everyone is welcome to join the group, all you need is a bicycle! The NGO sees bikes as a vehicle for the social and philosophical transformation of people and cities, promoting sustainable mobility and respect for public spaces in Medellín and its surrounding areas. SiCLeada is essentially Medellín’s weekly incarnation of Critical Mass, a global movement held regularly in major cities to promote awareness of sustainable transportation and respect for cyclists and their rights to the road.
The SiCLeada initiative started in 2010 and celebrated the 4th anniversary of Bellocicleta (a similar movement to SiCLas) on April 5 with a long trip north of Medellín to the neighboring city of Bello. During April, the mayor of Medellin declared an environmental red-alert due to air pollution, making the movement organized by SiCLas more relevant than ever. Moreover, participating in the SiCLeada is a very interesting way to get to know the city, especially the realities of life in areas that are never promoted to tourists. If you live in Medellin or are planning to visit the city, we highly recommend that you join this group for its weekly ride and support the cause.
Join the movement!
